Yes - there is an ASCOM driver for the Celestron AVX mount and it works with PHD and PHD2 - I've attached a diagram of my configuration of hardware and software, maybe it will help - or it could just confuse you :-) Do I need to download the ASCOM core and a Celestron driver? My understanding is that it acts as a sort of driver between other software and the hardware, which in this case would be PHD2. Okay, so if I purchase a laptop, what software packages will I need? Since I'm looking to control my mount remotely using a computer, I suppose I'd be using ASCOM. You don't want to be driving nails with a wrench, no matter how pretty it is. In terms of cost/usefulness, it's a bargain compared to other AP things. It will soon be running Sequence Generator Pro, and automating image acquisition. It runs PhD2, my focuser, my filter wheel, and my CCD. You can get a decent laptop from here for $200-300. I understand the philosophy, but honestly, you're making life hard for yourself. So many programs/device drivers are PC-centric. Doing AP with a Mac is doing things the hard way.
